The mountain pine is the true essence of the South Tyrolean arboreal landscape. Around a third of the mountain pine forests of South Tyrol are located in the Sarntal Valley. The mountain pine is a particularly resilient shrub which usually grows along forest edges. Its supple, curved branches hang low to the ground and can withstand every snowstorm.
Here in Reinswald, we have been harvesting and using the fine needles, cones and twig tips of the mountain pine for more than 100 years. The mountain pine oil derived from these parts is a high-quality natural treasure of the Sarntal Alps and has numerous possible applications. You are in a dense, cool forest. All alone, you walk through a labyrinth of trees and shrubs that is already very familiar to you because you have spent all of your life here, in your native forest. Even as a small chamois, this was your home, your refuge. But now you feel big and strong enough to finally leave this familiar place. The day you have been looking forward to all of your life is approaching.
High above, in the Sarntal Alps, it is even cooler and frostier than in your native forest below. You look up and wonder what awaits you when you make your way up together with your father. „Only chamois that are ready for the mountain are able to reach the peak. Those who break through the veil of fog and ascend to the high rocky slopes become strong and powerful animals.“
One sunny day, the time has finally come. You set out on the long journey to the summit with your father. You have spent the last few days resting and eating so that you are strong enough to tackle your big adventure. First, the trail leads you over roots and sticks, then over stone and gravel. You lift your hooves swiftly. Your father makes the whole thing look so effortless, but you still have to focus on each jump so as not to lose your balance on the steep terrain.
Many deep breaths later, your heads finally emerge from the veil of fog and you can already see the mountain peak before you. At the same moment, a bushy shrubland appears right in front of your eyes, the likes of which you have never seen before. This one plant suddenly stretches across your entire field of vision. Widely scattered, these dark pastel green bushes emerge from the ground: they are mountain pines.
Their two-needle ends are firm and pointed. Their cones shine in perfectly shaped ellipses. A fresh scent arises that reminds you of the fragrant conifers in the valley and yet is so new to you. You breathe in deeply, taking in the sweet scent of mountain pine. It gives you strength and fills you with confidence.
