Half of the South Tyrolean territory is covered by forest. There are 111 different types of forest with 1113 plant species, 173 mosses, 49 tree species and 23 shrubs. The mountain pine grows above the tree line, in avalanche tracks as well as down in the valley and has an important protective function.
The mountain pine has a deep and twisted root system valiantly withstanding natural forces such as avalanches or mudslides, thus protecting the pastures and meadows below. In the Sarntal Valley the plant is highly appreciated for its beneficial properties for body and mind. Here, in the heart of South Tyrol, 100% pure mountain pine essential oil sourced from wild forests has been produced for more than 100 years.
No wonder that Philipp loves this plant. It offers protection, a secure job for the next generation in the most beautiful workplace in the world: amidst nature in the mountains of the Sarntal Valley. Now, during the summer season, our employees leave early in the morning to gather mountain pine twigs at an altitude of 2,000 meters. Each harvest is carefully documented by the forest department in order to guarantee the preservation of this natural resource. The harvest not only creates new habitats and free spots loved by the fauna, but also a rich and diverse flora.
The small branches with the needles and cones are chopped on site and transported by tractor to the distillery, while larger and gnarled wood is processed into firewood. We value our mountain pines and attribute great importance to a sustainable use of this gift of nature.
There may be 1113 plant species in South Tyrol’s forests, but there is one thing we agree on with Eschgfeller – breath of the mountains: the mountain pine is by far our favourite – our life and our fragrance.
